Understand qualification titles, CPD certificates and assessment so you can compare course outcomes and ask clearer questions before booking.

When comparing aesthetics courses, you may see VTCT, CPD, a qualification level and the word “accredited” on different pages. These terms do not all describe the same thing. Start with the exact outcome of the course and how it fits your intended next step.
What should you check for a VTCT course?
Ask for the full qualification title, awarding organisation and qualification number where applicable. Check the centre’s approval for that particular qualification, the entry requirements, what you will learn and how you will be assessed.
VTCT Skills explains how to find approved training providers and check the qualifications they offer. A logo alone is not a substitute for checking the actual course details.
What does CPD mean?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. The CPD Certification Service describes it as ongoing learning to develop professional skills and knowledge. It can include courses, workshops and other learning activities.
For a course advertised as CPD accredited, ask who accredits it, which skills it covers, how practical learning works and which certificate you receive. A CPD certificate should not be assumed to be the same outcome as a named regulated qualification.
What does a qualification level tell you?
GOV.UK lists qualification levels, including Level 3 and Level 4 awards, certificates and diplomas. The level does not, by itself, tell you the treatments covered, the course length or every possible progression route.
Use the Ofqual register to check a qualification advertised as regulated. Match the exact title and details rather than searching only for the academy’s name.
Compare the outcome with your goal
- Does the course accept your current qualifications and experience?
- What knowledge and practical skills will you be assessed on?
- What is the exact certificate or qualification awarded?
- Will your intended next course accept it as an entry qualification?
- Will your intended insurer accept your training for the services you plan to offer?
Get answers for your own intended route. Do not assume that every CPD course is suitable for beginners or that every qualification covers every advanced treatment. Ask the next training provider and insurer directly where their acceptance matters.
